Motivated by the difficulties of the Depression
in Geelong, Victoria, three young architects, Ewen Laird,
Langham Proud and John Buchan initiated the beginnings of an
organization that today is know throughout the world. On the 10th
of March 1931, the name Apex, meaning the height of ambition,
was adopted and the Apex Club of Geelong came into being. The
ideals were formed and membership was made available to all
young men between the ages of eighteen and forty.
The symbol for Apex was decided on an equilateral triangle
with the base representing ‘Citizenship’, the development
of community leadership and motivation for an improved quality
of life. One side represents ‘Service’, the
tangible form of an Apexian’s work in the community. The
third side represents ‘Fellowship’, the enjoyment
and fun of belonging to our Club and Association. Within
the triangle, the rays of the sun are symbolic of the rising
generation of youth, to show that Apex is no longer purely
an Australian Association but is increasing rapidly throughout
the world.
